Program success refers to how effectively our sponsorship programs – from the student and school selection processes, to the support we provide each NCEP scholar to help them succeed, to our methods of evaluation – align with our values.
Success takes many different forms, and we believe it is important to understand – and to share – the story of each of our scholars in order to learn how they have derived value from their education. Our metrics for assessing student progress do not reduce these stories into numbers, but provide us with a balanced report card through a mix of quantitative and qualitative measures.
We believe that education makes a difference. We believe that education teaches children to dream big, and empowers them to pursue these dreams. It is a sustainable form of aid that helps people help themselves rather than creating ongoing dependency; an investment in education is not just an investment in individuals, but in the prosperity and well-being of communities over the long-term. When we evaluate the success of our programs, therefore, we use a broad range of short-term and long-term, and quantitative and qualitative measures to capture the myriad ways in which education can make a difference.
One way of monitoring the value of education in the short-term is by reviewing the grades that NCEP scholars attain at school. However, this does not tell the whole story. By keeping in close contact with NCEP scholars – while they are attending school as an NCEP scholar and after they have graduated – their families, and their teachers, we are able to gauge their development, enable opportunities that are a good fit for them, identify areas for improvement, and tell their stories both in a much more meaningful way. This commitment to each NCEP scholar is a promise that is at the heart of what we do, and one we make to each student we sponsor.
NCEP is committed to continuous improvement, and an integral element of our sponsorship programs is to open two-way channels of communications that connect our team in Canada with our donors, volunteers, scholars, and their teachers and families in Nepal. This allows us to learn from their experiences with NCEP, and adapt our programs accordingly.
